Founded in 1887 by brothers George and Edward Amerige and incorporated as a city on February 14, 1904, Fullerton is a community deeply proud of its heritage and optimistic about its future. Located in the heart of North Orange County, approximately 22 miles southeast of Los Angeles, Fullerton has grown from a small agricultural town into a thriving community of more than 142,000 residents.

When George and Edward Amerige first came to the area, the landscape was largely covered with acres of wild mustard. The brothers had previously owned land in Sierra Madre, but they were impressed by the prosperous orchards and ranches surrounding Placentia to the east and Anaheim to the south. They eventually sold their Sierra Madre holdings, as well as their grain business in Massachusetts, and turned their attention to developing a new community.

On May 14, 1887, the Amerige brothers received title to 430 acres of land and began developing what would become the Fullerton townsite. Their vision helped establish the foundation for a community that would grow alongside Orange County’s agricultural economy and, over time, develop a diverse economic and cultural identity.

Fullerton’s heritage remains an important part of its character. Unlike many communities that have experienced rapid development, Fullerton has preserved numerous historic landmarks and buildings that tell the story of its past. The rehabilitation and restoration of historic buildings in the downtown area—part of the original townsite—reflect the community’s commitment to building its future while honoring the foundation on which it was built.

Today, Fullerton is one of Orange County’s largest and most established cities. Its unique character comes from the combination of residential neighborhoods, businesses and industries, educational institutions, and cultural resources. The city is home to institutions including California State University, Fullerton; Hope International University; Fullerton College; and the Southern California College of Optometry.

From its agricultural beginnings and orange groves to its connections with fruit punch and electric guitars, Fullerton has a distinctive history that continues to shape the community today. Its historic downtown, landmarks, and preserved buildings serve as reminders of how much the city has changed while also reflecting the traditions that remain important to its residents.
